Since 2021 we have invited museum specialists to visit Estonia in order to exchange our experiences, learn from each other and get inspired by showcasing the museums in Tallinn. A two-day event with approximately 10-15 museum experts will result in lots of new ideas and fresh thoughts on creating the best museum experiences.
Finland
Did you know that Oulu will be the European Capital of Culture in 2026? Among other events, Oulu will become the home for a new museum complex that brings together the new exhibitions from Ostrobotnia and Tietomaa museums. The 4-day visit took them to the Eesti Meremuuseum, Lastemuuseum Miiamilla and PROTO avastustehas in addition to the Eesti Arhitektuurimuuseum, Ahhaa, Eesti Rahva Muuseum and Fotografiska Tallinn. Participants: employees from the Oulun taidemuseo, Science Center Tiedekeskus Tietomaa and Pohjanmaan Museo.
Latvia
It was great to hear positive feedback about our bigger projects like the Seaplane Harbour, Vabamu Museum and Proto Invention Factory, but a lot of conversation came from when we visited the small Kalamaja community museum and also the award-winning “The Kolhoz Apartment Building“ exhibition in Estonian Open Air Museum, that transported an actual soviet apartment building across Estonia to show it in Tallinn. Participants: Kubalu School Museum, Museum of Literature and Music, Jēkabpils History Museum and Daugavpils Design and Art Secondary School “Saules Skola”.
Our guests were most impressed by the Vabamu Museum of Occupations and Freedom and also the Kalamaja museum. Vabamu got its approval for the way it tells a story of a painful past without making the whole museum visit a somber experience while Kalamaja museum was a great example of bringing the local community together to create and grow a museum. Beside those museums the group also managed to visit the Estonian Maritime Museum, PROTO Invention Factory and Estonian Open Air Museum. Participants: KAMU Espoo City Museum, Lahti Historical Museum, Lahti Museum, and Good Kombo Oy.
The most vivid memories come from the Vabamu Museum and Proto Invention Factory. The delegation also visited Estonian Maritime Museum, e-Estonia Showroom, Maarjamäe Palace, Film Museum and Career Centre. Participants: Aviation Museum, Science Centre Tietomaa, Museum and Science Centre Luuppi and Metsähallitus.
