The Craft Museum of Finland is a specialized museum for handicraft covering entire Finland. The museum covers all techniques of handicraft, from house building to lace making and from forging to the design of ornaments. The National Costume Center of Finland and The Conservation Center are part of the museum.
The roots of the Craft Museum of Finland go back to 1890, when the Imperial Senate supported the founding of a handicraft museum. After several changes and pauses in its operations, the museum was re-established in Jyväskylä in 1982 as the Home Industry Museum of Finland.
Recognized in 1992 as one of Finland’s first national specialized museums, it also became home to the National Costume Center of Finland and later the Conservation Center for Textiles.
Since 1997 the museum has carried its current name, and in 2000 it opened its doors in a newly renovated building in Jyväskylä, where it continues to celebrate and preserve Finland’s rich craft heritage.
